Add an account
Type your email address and your name. Metre2 Mail finds the settings for you: it knows the big providers, then asks your provider's own setup server, Mozilla's public database of providers and your domain's mail records. Only your domain name is sent to look them up.
- If it can't find them, it shows its best guess with the server names and ports, so you can check or change them.
- Choose IMAP (mail stays on the server and in step with your phone) or POP3 where your provider offers both.
App passwords for Gmail, iCloud and Yahoo
These providers want an app password rather than your normal password. The app shows the steps for your provider and a button that opens the right page.
- Gmail: turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account first, then make an app password at myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and paste it in.
- An app password works only for this app, and you can cancel it at any time from your provider's account page.
Outlook.com, Hotmail and Microsoft 365 work mailboxes
Microsoft no longer accepts passwords from email apps, so these accounts use Sign in with Microsoft: Microsoft's own sign-in page opens in your browser, and Metre2 Mail only receives permission to read and send your mail. It never sees your password.
- Microsoft mailboxes are set up in Microsoft 365 mode, which works even where an organisation has switched IMAP off. Advanced: use IMAP instead is there if you need it.
- See Microsoft 365 mode in this help for what it does.
Where your passwords go
Passwords and app passwords are kept in Windows Credential Locker, protected by your Windows sign-in - never in a settings file. Microsoft sign-in tokens are encrypted for your Windows account.
One account free, more with Mail Pro
One email account is free, with everything in this help except the features marked Pro. Mail Pro adds as many accounts as you have, with one inbox for all of them.
Make it your default email app
Metre2 Mail opens mailto: links and .eml files. To make it the default, open Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps, find Metre2 Mail and choose it for MAILTO and .eml.
