BIM Explorer - free

Viewer and propertiesFREE

Open any IFC model and look round it: the spatial tree and IFC types, every property and quantity of the element you click, seven display modes, sections, measuring and named views. Two models together, a model library on your PC, and nothing uploaded anywhere.

How it works

Step by step

1

Open the IFC file

Drag the .ifc file onto BIM Explorer or click Open IFC. IFC 2x3, IFC4 and IFC 4.3 open, and large files are prepared in stages with the progress shown. Or Load sample to try it: choose the sample house, or a duplex apartment or clinic exported from Revit (buildingSMART test models, CC BY 4.0). The sample house is on the downloads page.

2

Click any element

Click a wall, door or slab to select it. The Selection panel shows its ExpressID, GlobalId, type and every property set - type properties and quantities included.

3

Find your way round

Browse the Spatial tree (project, site, building, storeys) and the Types list. Press 1-4 for front, top, right and perspective, and F to fit the model.

4

Change how it looks

Original, white, clay, x-ray, blueprint, warm and realistic, plus wireframe (W), transparency and edges. Section the model and measure between two points (M).

5

Keep it

Models stay in the Library on your PC, so you can reopen them in one click. Save viewpoints, and save a PNG snapshot of the view.

Frequently asked questions

Is BIM Explorer free?

Yes. The viewer, model tree, properties, display modes, sections, measuring, two models together, colour by property, floor plans on screen, the quantity check and BCF issues are free, with no account. BIM Explorer Pro is an optional one-off £29.99.

Which files does it open?

IFC models (.ifc) in IFC 2x3, IFC4 and IFC 4.3. It doesn't open native Revit (.rvt) or ArchiCAD (.pln) files - ask for an IFC export, which every BIM authoring tool can produce.

Is it in other languages?

The interface is in English, French and German. It follows your Windows language, and the globe button switches it.

Does my model leave my PC?

No. BIM Explorer works offline and keeps models on your PC.
