Quantity checkFREE

The first question about any model is whether it can be priced. The quantity check colours every element: green where the model carries its quantities, amber where a measurable element has none, grey for spaces, openings and annotation. Free, in one click.

BIM Explorer's quantity check colouring the sample house green where elements have quantities and amber where they don't, with the legend and counts
How it works

Step by step

1

Open the model

Open the .ifc file you've been sent. The check reads the model's own quantity sets (Qto_ and BaseQuantities sets).

2

Run the quantity check

In the Views tab click Quantity check, or type it in the command palette. The model is coloured straight away.

3

Read the legend

The legend counts Has quantities and No quantities. Spaces, openings, annotation and virtual elements are Not measured and left grey.

4

Look at the gaps

Use Isolate or Select on a legend row to see which elements have no quantities - often walls and roofs with openings, or a whole discipline exported without base quantities.

5

Take them off (Pro)

BIM Explorer Pro takes the quantities off by IFC type and storey - and computes them from the geometry where the model has none, labelled as computed.

Help: Inspecting the model has every option in detail.

Who it's for

Frequently asked questions

What counts as having quantities?

An element passes when the model's own quantity sets hold the main quantity for its class: side area for walls, area for slabs, roofs and coverings, length for beams, columns and members, volume for footings and piles. Doors, windows and fittings are counted. Computed values don't count here, on purpose - it's a check on the model.

Why are some elements grey?

Spaces, openings, annotation and virtual elements aren't measured, so they're left out of the check.

Is it free?

Yes. The quantity check is part of the free BIM Explorer. Taking the quantities off and sending them to a BOQ is BIM Explorer Pro.

Why does my Revit export show amber?

Revit only writes base quantities when "Export base quantities" is ticked in its IFC export settings. Ask for the model to be exported again with it ticked, or let BIM Explorer Pro compute them from the geometry.
