Metre2 Mail - free

Bring your old mail with youFREE

Moving off an old email setup? Metre2 Mail imports .pst and .ost data files folder by folder, .mbox mailbox files, such as a Gmail export, and loose .eml files - into any folder of any account. Big archives are fine, nothing is imported twice, and it's free.

Metre2 Mail's Import email window reading a .pst file: its folders with counts ticked, and a choice of matching folders or one folder

Sheet 01.pst · .ost · .mbox · .emlDuplicates skipped

How it works

Step by step

01

Open Import email

Right-click a folder and choose Import email..., or use Settings > Accounts > Import email...

02

Choose the file

Pick a .pst or .ost file on its own - or one or more .mbox or .eml files, or a whole folder of .eml files. Close any program that has a .pst open first.

03

Pick the folders

Mail reads the .pst and lists every folder with its count. Tick the ones you want; calendar items, contacts and tasks are left out and counted.

04

Choose where they go

Import into matching folders makes a new folder, "Imported - file name", with your folders inside it - or import everything into one folder.

05

Let it run

Progress shows as it goes, with Cancel. Close the window if you like: the import carries on, and a summary says what came in, what was skipped as a duplicate and what wasn't email.

Help: Importing and exporting has every option in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a PST file without the program that made it?

Yes. Metre2 Mail reads .pst and .ost files itself, so you don't need the program that made them. It imports the email; calendar items, contacts, tasks and notes are counted but left out.

Where does the imported mail go?

On an IMAP account it's copied to your mail server, so it's on your phone and webmail too. On a POP3 account it stays on this PC. In Microsoft 365 mode it arrives as received mail with its original dates.

What if I import the same file twice?

Emails already in the folder are skipped, matched on their Message-ID, so you don't get copies.

Does it keep dates and read state?

Yes - original dates, read and unread, attachments and attached emails come across. Imported mail never runs rules or shows notifications.

Is it free?

Yes. Importing .pst, .ost, .mbox and .eml is free. Exporting to .mbox and .eml is part of Mail Pro.

What about a password-protected .pst?

It opens. The password on a .pst isn't encryption, so Metre2 Mail can read it.
